description: Unpolished Maxi MK1 Submariner Date in a perfect vintage look with amazing patina.

There is a saying that the stupid people are lucky, but I’m actually not that stupid ;-). Recently I was able to offer a great unpolished MKII 1680, which immediately found a new home in a great Hamburg collection. A dear and longtime customer wrote me and said he had something for me . Already after the first picture it was clear that this watch had to be on my website. Vintage at it’s best. The entire look of this watch is simply wonderful and shows why it was right to turn my hobby into a profession.

But enough of the praising words and let’s start with the description of this vintage beauty.

As already mentioned, the case is unpolished! Actually, a look at the pictures is enough and I don’t have to write anything further, but here are the facts: Perfect proportions with the slight asymmetry that we know from early Sub Dates, which means there is a little more material on the right of the case than on the left. Perfect wide flattened edge cut as it should be and wonderful matt finish on the top of the case. Of course, the blood channel is also completely intact and rounds off the overall picture perfectly.

The watch has signs of wear, but that’s exactly how I want my vintage watches to be. Worn, unpolished, sharp! Worn, unpolished, sharp!

The dial is just as wonderful as the case. This is an MK1 MAXI dial with a wonderful patina. These dials are called MAXI dials, since Rolex used significantly more lume on their dials from the mid-1970s. This increases the area of the lume and gives the watch a more present look on the wrist. At that time this was done to ensure a longer luminosity of the dials. Today we love it because it just gives the watches a cool look.

By the way, the condition of the dial is excellent. It is untouched and only shows a small dot below the Officialy lettering, which can only be seen from a special angle. The patina is just gorgeous. Super strong and even, it harmonises perfectly with the overall impression of the watch. Incidentally, the patina is even stronger in real life than in the pictures, since our flash technique makes all the details visible, but the patina is sometimes a little lighter than in real life. Feel free to ask for a photo in natural sunlight!

The hands are original to the watch with a well-matched patina. As usual with original hands from that time, the tritium reacted slightly with the metal coating of the hands. That doesn’t bother on the wrist at all and we also fixed the back of the hands so that nothing crumbles or falls off.

The bezel is also unpolished and wonderfully sharp. The glas has been exchanged once and shows only minor signs of wear.

The bezel inlay is a wonderful MK3 inlay in top condition. It shows strong black color, which makes the dial even more effective, minor signs of wear and a bold print (fat font MK3!).

By the way, this inlay is 100% correct in time to the watch. No service, or exchange!

Finally, the information about the bracelet. 93150 Oyster with 580 lugs in fine condition with the same signs of wear as the case and only a slight stretch. It is also unpolished and with clasp code VD for 1978/79 it is the original bracelet for the watch.

Conclusion: Always a highlight to be able to offer something like this. A 1680 as I can imagine it perfectly in every collection.
