Description: Great early Explorer II with a so-called Chicchi di Mais dial.
The case is in wonderful and unpolished overall condition. It is characterized by perfect proportions, razor-sharp edges and a wonderful matte finish on the top of the case. There are minor signs of wear. Typically a little more on the right side of the case, but overall a wonderful case with a perfect look.
The dial is of course the highlight of the watch. Early white Explorer IIs had a special lume mixture that took on a very strong patina over the years. The Italians were the first to recognize the special nature of these dials and called them “CHICCHI DI MAIS”, which translated simply means corn kernels and I think the name is perfect because the lume material really has a color similar to corn kernels.
The condition of the dial is also perfect. Clear print, wonderfully even patina and as a further highlight, this watch is one of the few to have a consistent patina on the hands.
The bezel is also unpolished with light signs of wear and the sapphir glas is perfect.
This great and rare Explorer II comes with box and papers. It has been sold on July 31, 1992 by rolex authorized dealer ARTLAND WATCH CO in Hong Kong.
Just as the watch, the 78360 Oyster bracelet is in great condition. Unpolished, minor signs of wear and almost no stretch. With clasp code R2 for February 1992, this is also the original bracelet for the watch.
Conclusion: Vintage Explorer II in perfect condition and appearance.
